Struggle – Part 4

Time of freedom drew at last. One day the child, being sure of his loyalty, shut him in cage without locking the opening. The pair examined the surrounding and spotted no one around. He pushed the opening with beak. It swung outward allowing him to set free himself. He didn’t hesitate for a moment and joined her who was waiting for him anxiously and aghast at the sight. Without wasting time, they were en route to forest.
Both, singing the songs of freedom, reunion and joy continued their flight. Above them twinkling stars and twinkling moon smiled their light so much that everything on earth became vivid and they could see the wall of city, rovering dogs, and fields of corn, vast pastures and bright water sweeping behind. It was the most spell bounded scene eyes have ever seen. They went on covering the distance and finally the mountain came into view, beyond which a snug nest was waiting for them. He motioned her to land on the tree and dived down. He was out of breath, captivity and pruned wings had snatched his stamina. She looked at him inquiringly. After smoothing his breath he said, beloved that enormous mountain is impossible to fly over for me as great effort has brought us here but my shortened wings can’t take a more burden. Every limb of my body is aching. Hurdle is over now and road is clear onward. You shouldn’t worry about leaving me here while you return to the nest. In the morning we will make it for home together, right from here. After few arguments he succeeded in convincing her.
He made himself comfortable on a bough and closed his eyes. Cold of the night stiffed his body and he fell down on the ground. Fortunately it was a thick layer of hay, spread on the soil, saved him from getting hurt. He crawled under the hay which was rather warm. Soon he fell asleep.
The lot was treading steadily, telling anecdotes, creating jokes and laughing at them heartily. One of the men said for a fun; friends look, as I advance to the mountain, it moves towards me.
No, we can’t, replied others. “Pals, it is said only very few people can see the moving mountain”, second man paused and looked at others who seemed curious and were looking back at him inquiringly. He resumed his conversation… “And those people are called…Absolutely Oaf.” All chuckled loudly except the first one. The third man put his knapsack on ground, untied his gun, loaded it and shot taking the aim of mountain.
Now the mountain is dead and stopped moving, he said and all jeered again.
The fourth man starts walking and as he laid his foot, a painful cry came from under his foot. He stepped back reflexively and all gazed at the place from where voice came. Carefully they removed the hay with guns. A beautiful bird revealed which was injured for he was bleeding.
“You have crushed him; probably he is left with few breaths.”
“Yeah, it’s better to slaughter him.”
“And it would make a great breakfast.”
The man picked up the bird, produced a knife from his pocket and examined the wound with its point. “Friends, we are not here to kill a poor, helpless and injured creature. I will keep him until he gets healed completely and then it would be free to go.”
After returning to the place next morning, when she couldn’t find him, her frantic cries reached him. Chasing his replies, she saw few men little far away. She hovered above their head asking him how he let himself caught up again. He told her what happened.
“Don’t grieve, man is a strange creature and these people are different from the former. They provide me food, water and had put something on my wound which makes me feel better.”
She felt comfortable in their company. They also offered her boiled beans and chick peas. The lot continued climbing up the mountain and hunting wild animals. Day by day they grew fond of the birds. For a week or so, they looked after him, caressed his silky feathers and kept him safe from dangers. During the day he would sit on their shoulder and sang melodious songs to them. In the night, they would erect a tent, spread the beds and put him in the warm corner. Meanwhile she never put off her errands.
One day when it was broad day light and everything; the flowing water, green trees, fresh tuft of grass, blooming flowers, flying birds and fluttering butterflies, were representing a marvelous day, he stretched his wings, soared higher up the sky and completing a circle landed in front of the lot.
Yes little friend, we know it’s time to go. They kissed him good bye and patted gently.
He touched the ground with beak and paid his gratitude. He flew away along with her to the place where they belong.
The End......................

truggle – Part 3

I owe you a huge debt of gratitude for that. She said and followed him. They reached on a guava tree rich in leaves and fruit. He went to a secret hole in the trunk, pecked three times on the perimeter of it and joined her. Few minutes past a large green bird with red beak appeared. He looked around and came out walking gracefully. He had a red circle around his neck and shoulders too had crimson patches. They bowed as he came up to them and he greeted them pleasantly.
I wish you both a happy life. Tell me the truth what have you brought here? He asked.
O great chief of our race, a misfortune has befallen this poor friend of mine. Then he recounted her story and told him she wants to rescue her partner.
He pondered over the matter for a while and then addressed her; my forest mate; I have been in prolonged captivity of man twice. I am familiar with their language and will let you know how to deceive them. I have worked out a scheme for you as I have done for many others. Some of them stick to it and succeeded, others were weak and they failed. You will come across the good and evil men, avail from the former and stay away the latter. Remember, if you happened to have true love, then persistence and determination will be your weapons to cut the chains of your beloved. Now come here and I give you the details of plan.
She listened to him attentively, thanked and set off for her journey instantly.
On other hand, he was shut in the cage, feeling terrible. He wouldn't eat or drink in the beginning; stomachache pushed him to engulf the provisions. The child teased him by talking, poking and giggled at his being scared. He attempted to lift or break the cage by beating wings against iron bars. It did nothing but injured him badly. All endeavours of getting him salvation proved ineffective, which made him hopeless. Sometimes child fastened his legs and put him on shoulder. Unaware from the trick, he strived to dash into air which rendered in loss of his feathers, cut by child with scissors. Finally he gave up accepting it his fate and agreed to live as ordered, and started to comprehend the gibberish language of man. Days turned into weeks, he continued growing familiar with the temperament of men.
Recalling the road she went on crossing the, mountain, meadows, and villages. After couple of sojourn for food and water, eventually she reached at the rampart of city.
She cast a careful glance to examine the city so that she may possibly identify the house where incident had occurred. It was very hard to make out the house; therefore she followed the devised plan. Starting from one corner, she flew from house to house calling him as loud as her throat could allow. One, two, three and thus ten days passed without a hint but her determination never waived off. During the time she found a safe shelter for her and stayed there until the tenth day when she returned to the woods rather crestfallen.
Next morning, the neighbour saw her curled up and wailing again. He came up to her and asked, my friend I assume it didn't go all right. What’s the matter that you seem desolate?
She raised her head and informed him about the recent problem. After listening to her, he proposed a solution.
I have deduced that you feel insecure to lay eggs in city and in case you hatch eggs here, it would become impossible for you to recover your partner. Hmm! What I am going to suggest you requires more effort and devotion, for there is no other option at hand. That is you lay eggs here, so that in the period of day I may keep an eye on them for you while you are gone for him. Thus in the night after your returning you would be able to hatch eggs.
She thought for a while and said, I think if I ever will be able to thank you. She did as had been counselled and would leave the nest at daybreak and return at nightfall. Though it demanded more struggle and divided her attention, but nothing could make her lost hope. With time passed on, her prayers grew more imploring.
Eventually, Heavens answered her pleadings and endeavours proved productive. One day when sun had blown the trumpet to recall its troops of rays back and she was about to quit her research for day, she heard a feeble voice. Her heart throbbed at full blast and hair rose on neck. She tracked the voice and by calling him loudly, arrived at the house which she recognized at once. A cage was hanging in the corridor and there was he inside, restless and agitated. Both rejoiced at the sight of each and he warned her to be at safe distance. After shedding the tears of joy, both briefed each other about the miseries under which they have gone.
I knew that I will find and rescue you some day, she whispered to him.
O dear your sight gives me enough reason to live but….Alas! I must confess that everything I tried to get out of here resulted in vain. You must relinquish the idea of….
No, I won’t. We and our offspring are not doomed to be apart, she interrupted him and then told about the eggs and pleaded him to follow the plan. It brightened his eyes. He crammed the plan and promised not to be hopeless. Then she took leave and flapped the wings for return.
He remained true to his words and cooperated completely with child. He would take what is given to him, show interest in child. He learned their ways quickly, tried to understand the language. Occasionally he fluttered his wings to know whether they are grown and fly to the walls. When child seemed suspicious on him, he would come and sit on his shoulder. Thus, within days he won the trust of child. Sooner, having no doubt about his fidelity, the child, most of the time would keep him out of cage and didn't bother to prune his wings again. Meanwhile she visits him regularly and exchanges progresses.

Struggle – Part 2

Chimneys were thrusting smoke into the air and kitchens giving out appetizing aroma even tempting to the nostrils of bird’s nostrils. Manifestation of so strange things left them bewildered and surprised so much that they couldn’t spot the upcoming thunderbolt. In a jiff people were rushing to find some shelter, umbrellas were drawn out and shopkeeper engaged themselves in gathering the merchandises. Large drops of water brought them back to their senses and they flew towards the row of buildings and discovered a safe shelter. It rained so heavily that everything got drenched and streets turned into streams.
Heavens! It seems impossible to return the jungle, she said in terrified voice. I miss our little cozy nest.
Let the rain stop, and then we will hit the sky for the home, he replied in amusement. Don’t be panicked but enjoy the situation.
It didn’t comfort her but what she could do. That’s why she remained speechless and gave out a sigh.
Rain went on beating against the panes of windows and kept the pair hold their seats. Little stomach of them had taken in very little since the morning, so as the downpour abated for a while, they flew into the streets and looked through the litters but found inefficient supply of edibles. Aroma arising from the houses attracted them and timidly they peeped into them, but being scared, they didn’t dare to go near the human. Eventually they spotted the pieces of bread in a courtyard and there was no human in proximity. Hunger made them courageous and they landed near the pieces of bread. There was a basket whose one end stood on a small rafter and a long rope, undetectable from a short distance, was fastened to it which ran to somewhere in corridor; and the other end was positioned on ground. Food lay in the region of and under the basket, slowly and gingerly they got nearer and started eating ravenously. He kept looking around suspiciously and let her eating. At last they both reached under the basket and were having their feast when they felt a slight tug in the rope. It was so sudden that they couldn’t figure it out, the rafter slipped away and basket fell on them with a thud. They screeched and flutter in vain. They heard triumphant cries and clapping.
Moments later, they heard running steps approaching near. Through the cracks they saw a man, a woman and a child, holding a sheet in hand which the man put on the basket. It went dark inside and then the trapped couple noticed the rising basket and tried to get rid of it. Out of frying pan into the fire, as they got out of the basket few hands grabbed them, still under the sheet. The child took off the cloth and watched his prey excitedly. In her despair she pecked him frantically and the horrified child released her. She flew away to the safe distance without looking behind and knowing nothing about her partner. After smoothing her breath, she came to know the absence of him. She called him again and again but no reply came which made her head whizzed and heartbroken. She went back to the house and called him hysterically. She followed his faint voices and saw him in the hands of man who very likely was arguing with the child, because he was pointing and watching the continuously shrieking bird with gloomy eyes. He raised the bird as to let him go. Meanwhile, the child wailed madly and the mother patted him tenderly and father lowered his hands. The child hurried into the house and came back quickly carrying a gilded cage in his hand. The man put the bird in, locked and handed it to the child.
With a heavy heart she pleaded as loud as she could, fly from one wall to another restlessly. As dejected she was, her eyes originated the cascade of tears and vocal cords produced most painful voices which touched the core of every being whose ears it travelled. Some birds nearby had witnessed the imprisonment of her partner, they came to the miserable creature and consoled her. “O dear fellow! Your loss, it goes without saying, is unbearable and we all feel sorry for you. But dear friend, there is nothing you can do but be patient. We all have undergone through such tragedies and learnt that time will heal all the wounds. So return to your home and live with what have befallen you, they said. One at a time, they came to her, presented a small lump of food and flew away. She thanked them and accepted their present wrapped in consoles and sympathies.
For the people rain had stopped but to her it dwelled in her beady eyes. It was getting dark and she thought it best to leave for home. It seemed impossible to fly home without him but she made it to her nest for her life as it is dear to everyone. Straws woven skillfully into nest were giving off his smell, and home seemed a wrecked place without him. Her whole body was sore and eyes heavy with slumber. She kept on moaning until heavy sleep alleviated her anguish and desolation. Following every regular interval, pangs of parting woke her up in the dead night. She spent the night restlessly.
Next morning, for rest of the birds and animals of woods, it was as magnificent one as ever. But for her it brought more tears in her eyes. Everything was dull and grey and she remained motionless for a long time, crying and mourning. A green bird, who was watching her, came and inquired about the trouble.
My friend, I am your neighbor and have been listening to you sobbing whole night. Your trouble, troubles me too. Pray consider me your friend and let me know what has saddened you and if I can be of any assistance to you.
She raised her head and replied quietly, I am grateful to you for your concern and then she told what happened to her.
Indeed, your grief is inconsolable but instead of crying you must seek the counsel of the wisest green bird of our clan. The victims like you come to him for help. I must take you to him.

Struggle – Part 1

At a snail's pace the crimson hot sun, behind from the eastern mountains, came into view. Far and very far away from the large city of people in the immense and dense jungle, as the opening golden rays fall on the top of Minarets, Steeples, skyscrapers and apex of the green trees ; our little beautiful birds woke up feeling the warmth of rays. The pair cuddled and muttered to each other. Then she bird spread her wings, wide opened her beak and took fresh, cold air in. It refreshed her too. She perched on a bough and observed the sight before her. It was a bright day with clear blue sky above head. She felt cold air blowing against her and dancing waves of air were rustling through leaves making them hop. The summits of the colossal mountain were gleaming in golden light of the sun, casting its reflection through flowing streamat its foot. Fruit laden trees were swinging to kiss the elixir in stream and tossing ripened fruits to be carried away by splashing torrents. Blades of grass were waving to dispose of the dew drops and flowers of every color were sprinkling the sweet smell making the air soothing. Some fellow birds were taking their morning flight, diving and soaring. The sight was so magnificent and peaceful; tranquility seemed to prevail all around. Fascinating panorama and fragrant breeze delighted her so much that she sang in her most cheerful and the sweetest voice. The song of happiness and gratitude to God echoed back to her ears.
She hoped back to the nest and awoke her slumbering partner. She pecked him tenderly and whispered some loving words. He opened his tiny round eyes, raised neck and replied her affections with akin passion and love. Both sat on the branch to survey the scene before them.
For a moment, they looked at each other, decided through eyes and plunged into the air, screeching aloud. They played tricks with each other. Occasionally they fly straight, at another time they cross each other’s path or soar higher and higher, then stop fluttering their wings and let them fall. Most happily, they flew over the emerald trees and multi-colored flowers and bright grass and winding stream; inhaling the fresh zephyr in and stale warm breath out. They flew opposite to the gushing water, touching it with their claws and squealing excitedly. At last, they landed on the bank of brook. Rays of the radiant sun had turned colorless water into bright golden liquid. After taking a breath, the pair gulped fresh, golden liquid. Splashed water and flapped their wings. Thus the adorable couple took ablution to purify them. They saw their reflections in clear water and contemplated. The school of little fish caught their attention. They were swimming to and fro and some naughty fish came at the surface of water. She looked at her partner and then seized a fish in her beak. The waterless environment made the fish agitated and she beat her head and tail in agony. This softened the heart of caring bird and she threw away her back in water. With the sound of splash, the fish fell in water and joined her school immediately. It made the couple happy even more and they sang the song of freedom as loud as they could.
Then after a while he spoke to her like this. O my love! Let’s celebrate this marvelous day by having an adventure across the mountain, in the town of men. I happened to be there couple of times and have witnessed loads of mysterious things. This creature called man is very strange but interesting. Their way of living will amuse you very much, I swear.
“Though you raised my curiosity and I don’t need to be afraid of anything in your company. But o, dear me, I have learnt many dreadful sorties through other fellow birds. Men are fond of roasting the fowls in fire and capturing them in cages. Isn’t that terrible”? She said.
To some extent, it is true but they have made a mountain out of a molehill. I’ll stand by you through thick and thin and protect you till my last breath, he replied. They have more delicious foods too, eyes have never seen and tongues never tasted, he added.
Indeed, I don’t doubt on you my precious. I know it would be a great fun exploring world with you, she answered back.
The pair took a deep breath, flapped their wings and soar higher. They flew above the gigantic mountain. They traversed the meadows, herds of cattle grazing in and flocks of bird flying above. Several villages came in their way where peasants were growing crops and ploughing fields, vigorous bull running ahead of them. Children were chasing the dogs and women tramping on side walkings, carrying food for their husbands. The pair landed on fields and swallowed grains, seeds, insects and drank water from tube wells. They resume their journey and when they reached the outskirts of the city, it was almost midday. Some dark gray patches of clouds have appeared from nowhere and sun was playing hide and seek with them.
The air is getting colder and moister, I smell the rain. Don’t you think it’s dangerous? She said.
Don’t you worry my dear, it will be alright. Just in case it rains we will find shelters in the city, He replied.
They entered in the city, flew above many houses, streets and markets. Their eyes beheld many odd things which took them completely. They could see many birds chirping here and twittering there, animals too were making noises but they didn’t look like from the jungle. Some of them had been tethered while fowls were flapping in the iron cages. Ponies looked pale and skinny, asses seemed abstracted and lousy.
Children were chasing butterflies, throwing stones at dogs, splashing in the ponds and playing various games which were new to the eyes of the birds. Some were running in the streets and others weeping in mother’s laps.
The hustle and bustle in the markets was a spectacle beset with appealing activities. Men and women of every age and size attired in every kind of color, were laughing, yelling, brawling, purchasing and selling things. Some of them sat idly, gossiping and boasting, few smoking their pipes and reading papers. Shops were crammed with stuff.
